A Study In Material and Light
This single-family residence explores how subtle shifts in material and color can dramatically influence a home's relationship to its surroundings. While the architectural form remained consistent throughout the design process, Y.A. studio developed multiple exterior palettes to evaluate how different combinations of wood siding, dark cladding, and natural finishes could express warmth, permanence, and scale.
The studies ranged from richly contrasting compositions that emphasize the home's sculptural massing to lighter, more natural palettes that blend with the surrounding landscape. Each option was carefully considered alongside the home's generous glazing, indoor-outdoor living spaces, and layered terraces, ensuring the exterior materials complemented both the architecture and the site's mature gardens.
Inside, large sliding doors dissolve the boundary between kitchen, dining, and outdoor gathering spaces, creating a home centered on connection and everyday living. The material studies ultimately became an important design tool; a way to understand how color, texture, and light shape the character of a place.
